The Victorian Society has objected to the planned demolition of two historic buildings
The Victorian Society has strongly objected to the planned demolition of the WWI Army hut and 1908 Speirs & Co. classroom at 5, Palace Street East, Berwick.
"The survival of the two important features – the Speirs & Co. of Glasgow classroom and the World War One barracks hut – would mean reassessing the applications. Both ‘temporary buildings’ have been on the site for over 100 years. Permanently damaging the character area and history of Berwick-upon-Tweed for more dwellings in an already substantial scheme is simply not justified. The structures should be adapted and reused, ensuring their protection and longevity for the future, and preserving the significance of the site.
We object to the proposal as presented and strongly urge your authority to require more information. If this is not provided then we recommend refusal."
